Waterworks (1972) Board Game

Waterworks is a classic card game that was first released in in 1972. It was designed by Mattiene Moustakas and has since become a popular game for 2-5 players. The game involves players trying to be the first to complete their pipeline system.

Game Components of Waterworks

  • 110 pipe cards (copper, lead, and leaking lead pipes)
  • 1 bathtub-shaped card tray
  • 10 metal wrenches
  • Faucet and spout cards for each player.

    How To Setup Waterworks

To set up the game, each player starts with one faucet (valve) and one spout card. They are then dealt five additional pipe cards to form their initial hand. Each player also receives two metal wrenches. The remaining cards are placed in the bathtub-shaped tray, ready to be drawn.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

  • Objective: Be the first player to build a pipeline of the specified length (depending on the number of players) from the faucet to the spout.
  • Pipe Types: Copper pipes (never leak), lead pipes (vulnerable to leaks), and leaking lead pipes.
  • Turn Structure: Players take turns laying pipe cards that match the direction and shape of the existing pipeline. They can add good pipes to their own pipeline or leaky pipes to another player’s pipeline.
  • Special Cards: T junctions and caps can be used to change the direction of the pipeline, but T junctions must be capped to prevent water from flowing in multiple directions.
  • Repairing Leaks: Metal wrenches can be used to repair leaky pipes.
  • Drawing Cards: Players draw a new card at the end of their turn to maintain a hand of five pipe cards.

    Player Experience

Waterworks offers a mix of strategy and sabotage. Players must balance building their own pipeline with disrupting their opponents’. The game requires a significant amount of table space, especially as the pipelines grow. While it can be fun and engaging, the complexity and spatial requirements can be daunting.

    Pros

  • Strategic Depth: Allows for both individual strategy and player interaction through sabotage.
  • Retro Charm: The game’s vintage design and bathtub card tray add a unique touch.
  • Family-Friendly: Suitable for older kids and adults alike.

    Cons

  • Space Requirements: The game demands a large playing area, which can be a challenge.
  • Complexity: The rules, though simple at first glance, can be complex to master.
  • Lengthy Games: Games can be prolonged due to the need to build lengthy pipelines and repair leaks.

    Personal Thoughts on Waterworks

Waterworks is ideal for those who enjoy strategic card games with a mix of solo effort and social interaction. It’s a great fit for families with older children and for anyone nostalgic for vintage board games. However, it may not be the best choice for those with limited playing space or a preference for quick, simple games. Despite its challenges, Waterworks remains a fun and engaging addition to any board game collection.
