Track (1975) Board Game

Track is an abstract strategy board game that was released in 1975 by designer J. Brian McCarthy. It is a two-player game that requires players to strategically place track pieces on a board in order to create the longest continuous line.

Game Components of Track

  • Game board: A simple plastic rectangle with a 6×8 grid of plastic pins
  • Cogs/Gears: 16 in total, 8 brown and 8 white, each player having 7 normal gears and 1 master gear
  • Master Gear: Slightly different shade with a directional arrow engraved on it

    How To Setup Track

To set up the game, the white cogs are placed along the bottom of the board, with the white master cog fourth from the left. The brown cogs are placed along the top line of the board, with the brown master cog fourth from the right.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

  • Objective: The goal is to maneuver your cogs to turn your opponent’s master cog in the direction of its arrow.
  • Player Turn: Players take turns moving one cog at a time, either forward, backward, left, right, or diagonally.
  • Movement Restrictions: Gears cannot jump over other gears but can move diagonally through a space between two gears.
  • Winning Condition: The game ends when one player successfully turns their opponent’s master cog in the direction of its arrow.

    Player Experience

Track is a game of subtle connections and strategy, requiring players to think tactically about their moves. It is easy to learn but involves a degree of strategic thinking to outmaneuver the opponent. Games are typically short, lasting around 10 minutes.

    Pros

  • Simple yet Strategic: Easy to learn but requires tactical thinking.
  • Quick Games: Games are short, making it a great fill-in game.
  • Unique Mechanics: The moving cogs and rotating mechanism is quite unique compared to other board games.

    Cons

  • Limited Complexity: The game is relatively simple and may not appeal to players seeking more complex strategies.
  • Aesthetics: The 1970s design and plastic quality, while nostalgic, may not be appealing to all players.

    Personal Thoughts on Track

Track is ideal for players who enjoy abstract strategy games and are looking for something a bit different. It’s a great choice for casual gamers or those new to strategy games, as it introduces strategic thinking without overwhelming complexity. However, it may not be the best fit for players seeking a more intricate or lengthy gaming experience.
