Tesseract (2015) Board Game

Tesseract is a card game released in 2015 by designers Valentina Moscon and Matteo Zanfi. It is known for its unique gameplay mechanics centered around pattern building and pattern recognition. The game has garnered attention for its strategic elements and engaging gameplay for 2-4 players.

Game Components of Tesseract

  • 64 dice block (Tesseract): Sits at the center of the board on a raised, rotating platform.
  • Individual player boards: Each player has a lab to manage their dice.
  • Containment matrix board: Where players isolate and neutralize the dice.
  • Breach board: Tracks the breaches that can lead to game loss.
  • Character cards: Each player has a unique character with asymmetric abilities.
  • Research cards and Containment cards: Provide players with additional abilities and advantages.
  • Base plates and dice sleeve: For setting up the Tesseract at different difficulty levels.

    How To Setup Tesseract

To set up Tesseract, place one of the base plates on the stand, corresponding to the desired level of difficulty. Use the dice sleeve to arrange the 64 dice into a 4x4x4 cube on the rotating platform. Set up the containment board and Breach board nearby. Each player receives a player board, a randomly dealt character card, a starting die from the top corner of the Tesseract, and a starting level 2 Research card. Finally, prime the Tesseract by removing two additional dice, rolling them, and placing them in the Primed slots.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

  • Cooperative gameplay: Players work together to contain the Tesseract.
  • Dice manipulation: Remove, adjust, and transfer dice between labs.
  • Containment: Isolate dice into the containment matrix by forming sets or runs of the same value or sequence, either all the same color or different colors.
  • Research and Containment cards: Earned during play to provide additional abilities.
  • Threat phase: Deal with the Tesseract’s reactions, removing and rolling dice, which can cause breaches.
  • Objective: Fill the containment matrix with 24 unique dice to win. The game is lost if the Tesseract is empty or 7 breaches occur.

    Player Experience

Tesseract offers a highly collaborative and challenging experience. Players must work together to manage the dice, leveraging their unique character abilities and earned cards to contain the Tesseract. The game scales well for solo play and features adjustable difficulty levels, making it engaging for a variety of players. The rotating platform and the dynamic nature of the game create a visually stunning and tense experience.

    Pros

  • High replay value: Multiple characters and difficulty levels.
  • Engaging solo mode: Just as challenging and fun as multiplayer.
  • Collaborative gameplay: Players must work closely together.
  • Innovative mechanics: Unique dice manipulation and containment system.
  • Adjustable difficulty: Suitable for different skill levels.

    Cons

  • Complex setup: Requires careful arrangement of the 64-dice block.
  • Steep learning curve: Understanding the rules and strategies can take time.
  • High tension: The threat of breaches and the Tesseract’s reactions can be stressful.

    Personal Thoughts on Tesseract

Tesseract is ideal for fans of cooperative and puzzle strategy games who enjoy complex, challenging experiences. It is perfect for groups looking to work together to solve a high-stakes problem, and the solo mode offers a similarly engaging challenge for individual players. The game’s innovative mechanics and adjustable difficulty make it a great addition to any board game collection. However, it may not be the best fit for those who prefer simpler, more introductory games due to its complexity and steep learning curve.
