Scrabble (1948)

Scrabble

Scrabble is a word game in which two to four players score points by placing tiles, each bearing a single letter, onto a game board divided into a 15×15 grid of squares. The game was invented by Alfred Mosher Butts, an unemployed architect from Poughkeepsie, New York, during the Great Depression. Butts analyzed games and puzzles and discovered three main categories: number games, move-centered games, and word-centered games. He combined all three to create Scrabble. The game was first named Lexiko, then Criss Cross Words, before being trademarked as the Scrabble Brand Crossword Game in 1948. Scrabble has since become a cultural icon and one of the leading board-and-tile games in the United States.

Why is Scrabble Popular?

Scrabble is popular because it is a challenging and entertaining game that requires players to use their vocabulary and strategic skills to form words and score points. It is also significant because it has been played by millions of people worldwide since its creation in 1931. Scrabble has been produced in many foreign languages, Braille, and magnetic editions. It has also been the subject of tournaments since 1973. Scrabble has even been used as an educational tool to teach English as a second language.
