Pengo Jump (2022) Board Game

Pengo Jump is a children’s game released in 2022 by Blue Orange (EU). Designed by Oussama Khelifati and illustrated by Laurent Boissier, this game is a fun and engaging option for young players aged 4 and up. With a focus on cooperative gameplay and slide/push mechanics, Pengo Jump is a great choice for families looking for a interactive game that promotes teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Game Components of Pengo Jump

  • 1 Sea board
  • 30 Ice Chunk tiles
  • 4 penguin tokens
  • 6 walrus tokens
  • 1 cloth bag

    How To Setup Pengo Jump

To set up the game, start by placing the Sea Board on the game box. Draw 9 random Snowy tiles and arrange them on the Sea Board: place 4 tiles in a row as far as possible from the iceberg bridge, and the remaining 5 tiles in the available space. Ensure the tiles do not touch each other or the bridge. Place the remaining Ice Chunk tiles in the cloth bag. Position the 4 penguin tokens on the Ice Chunk tiles furthest from the iceberg bridge, one penguin per tile. The player who does the best penguin impression goes first, with gameplay proceeding clockwise.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

    Mechanics

  • Cooperative Game
  • Slide/Push

    Game Objective

  • Players must work together to move the penguins to the iceberg by sliding and pushing Ice Chunk tiles.
  • On each turn, a player must draw an Ice Chunk tile, slide it under the Iceberg bridge, and push it until it is fully in place. This may cause other tiles to be pushed out.
  • If a penguin falls off, it is placed on a free tile furthest from the bridge.
  • Optionally, a player can move one penguin per turn to an adjacent tile.
  • The game ends when all penguins reach the iceberg or when the tile bag is empty with penguins still on the ice chunks.

    Player Experience

Pengo Jump offers a fun and interactive experience, especially for children, with its simple yet engaging mechanics. Players enjoy the physical challenge of sliding tiles and the strategy of positioning penguins to avoid them falling off. The cooperative nature of the game encourages teamwork and communication among players.

    Pros

  • Cooperative Play: Encourages teamwork and collaboration.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Develops fine motor skills through tile sliding and penguin movement.
  • Visual Perception: Enhances visual perception by requiring players to judge distances and tile placement.
  • Family-Friendly: Suitable for children and adults alike, making it a great family game.

    Cons

  • Repetitive: Some players might find the gameplay repetitive.
  • Luck Factor: The random draw of tiles can introduce an element of luck rather than strategy.
  • Limited Complexity: The game is designed for younger players, which may make it too simple for older gamers.

    Personal Thoughts on Pengo Jump

Pengo Jump is an excellent choice for families with young children or for early childhood education settings. It promotes teamwork, fine motor skills, and visual perception in a fun and engaging way. The game’s simplicity makes it accessible to younger players, while its cooperative nature ensures everyone has a role to play. For older gamers, it might lack the complexity and depth they seek, but it remains a delightful addition to any family game collection.
