Notakto (2010)

Notakto is a board game that combines elements of tic-tac-toe and Nim, played across one or several boards with both players using the same piece (an “X” or cross). The game was invented by professor and backgammon player Bob Koca in 2010, when his five-year-old nephew suggested playing a game of tic-tac-toe with both players as “X”. Notakto is an impartial game, meaning the allowable moves depend only on the state of the game and not on which player is taking their turn.

Game Components of Notakto:

– 3×3 boards
– Pieces for both players (X or cross)

Game Setup of Notakto:

Prepare a finite number of empty 3×3 boards. Each player takes turns placing an X on the board(s) in a vacant space.

Gameplay Mechanics of Notakto:

Players take turns placing an X on the board(s) in a vacant space. If a board has a three-in-a-row, the board is dead and can no longer be played on.The game ends when all the boards contain a three-in-a-row of Xs, and the player who made the last move loses.

Game Objective of Notakto:

The goal is to force the other player to get three-in-a-row on the final board, while avoiding getting three-in-a-row on your own.
