Mezen (2023) Board Game

Mezen is a board game released in 2023 by designer Nikita Sorokin and artist Mariya Stankevich. Published by Hobby World, Mezen falls into the categories of Abstract Strategy and Environmental games, offering a unique gameplay experience for players.

Game Components of Mezen

  • Main board
  • Sets of double-sided tiles (white or black) featuring different animals
  • Score markers
  • 50/100 score tokens
  • Deck of goal cards
  • Amulet tokens
  • Starting player token

    How To Setup Mezen

To set up Mezen, place the main board in the center of the table. Each player receives a set of tiles in their chosen style, along with a score marker and 50/100 score token. Players arrange their 25 tiles into a randomly assigned five-by-five grid, ensuring the tiles are on their white side. Next, select 12 goal cards with matching symbols, shuffle them, and deal ten out face down (five above and five below the board). Reveal the first two goal cards. Each player takes five amulet tokens, with the remaining tokens placed in a central area. In a solo game, players take only two amulet tokens and place additional tokens on specific goal cards for later rounds.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

  • Tile Manipulation: Players manipulate their tile grid to meet the requirements of the goal cards.
  • Goal Cards: These cards reward points based on the location and arrangement of tiles.
  • Tile Flipping: Tiles are flipped to reveal different symbols, and players must fill gaps by sliding down tiles and replacing them with flipped tiles.
  • Scoring: Players score points for meeting the goal card requirements. They can choose to skip scoring and take two amulet tokens instead.
  • Additional Scoring: After round five, score one point for all black tiles; after the final round, score one point for all white tiles, unused amulet tokens, and tiles in chosen groups.
  • Objective: The player with the most points wins, or in a solo game, the goal is to meet a target score.

    Player Experience

Mezen offers a visually stunning experience with its traditional Mezen art style, making it a delightful addition to any game collection. However, the components are somewhat basic, being made of cardboard, which might detract from the overall experience. The game is solid but not spectacular, making it a good choice for a relaxing Sunday afternoon. It’s easy to get lost in the art style and enjoy the simplicity of the gameplay.

    Pros

  • Visually Stunning: The game features beautiful, traditional Mezen art.
  • Relaxing Gameplay: It’s a great game for unwinding and enjoying simple, strategic gameplay.
  • Easy to Learn: The rules are straightforward, making it accessible to new players.

    Cons

  • Basic Components: The cardboard tiles and lack of acrylic or dual-layered board may feel less premium.
  • Limited Complexity: Some players might find the game too simple or lacking in depth.

    Personal Thoughts on Mezen

Mezen is ideal for players who enjoy abstract strategy and tile-laying games but are looking for something less complex and more visually appealing. It’s a great choice for those who want to relaxation and casual gameplay without the need for intense strategic planning. While it may not be a 9/10 abstract game, it still offers a enjoyable and calming gaming experience.
