Kinoko (2022) Board Game

Kinoko is a board game released in 2022 by Helvetiq. Designed by Tim Rogasch and illustrated by Polina Ozean, Kinoko is a game that combines elements of dice rolling, memory, and set collection. The game is suitable for 2 to 4 players aged 8 and above, with a runtime of around 20 minutes.

Game Components of Kinoko

  • 24 mushroom cards in six different colors (Athletes, Musicians, Artisans, Scientists, Public Servants, Artists), each with numbers 1, 2, and 3
  • Six color identifier cards
  • Three dice with various actions (number swap, peek, reroll, swap hands, and blank sides)
  • Scoring tokens

    How To Setup Kinoko

To set up Kinoko, each player is dealt a secret color card that indicates the family of mushrooms they need to assemble. Each player receives a hand of three mushroom cards, one of each number (1, 2, and 3), but these cards are face down so players do not know their colors. Two additional hands of cards are placed face down on the table. One of the leftover color cards is flipped over to reveal the forbidden color for the round. The deck is shuffled, and each player’s hand is arranged face down, with the rank of each card visible on the back.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

  • Roll and Act: Players roll three dice and choose one action based on the dice results.
  • Swap Numbers: Swap any two cards of the same number from any location.
  • Peek: Look at any card and return it to its original location.
  • Reroll: Reroll the dice to change the available actions.
  • Swap Hands: Exchange your hand with any other hand on the table.
  • Blank: No action available.
  • End the Round: If a player believes they have assembled their set of mushrooms, they can end the round by revealing their hidden objective mushroom.
  • Scoring: If the set is correct, the player scores 2 points. If not, other players score 1 point. Players holding forbidden color cards lose 1 point.
  • Game End: The game continues until a player reaches 4 points.

    Player Experience

Kinoko offers a unique blend of strategy, deduction, and memory. Players must manage their hands carefully, using the dice actions to manipulate the cards on the table without revealing too much about their own objectives. The game is light-hearted and fun, with cute illustrations of mushrooms in various professions. It is easy to learn but requires tactical thinking to win.

    Pros

  • Portability: The game comes in a small box and is easy to carry.
  • Family-Friendly: Suitable for ages 7+ and plays 2-4 players.
  • Quick Playtime: Games typically last around 20 minutes.
