Kero (2018) Board Game

Kero is a dice-based board game that was released in 2018 by Hurrican. Designed by Sean Fletcher and Prospero Hall, the game is set in a post-apocalyptic world where players must compete for resources in order to survive. The game features unique mechanics such as real-time gameplay and territory building, making it an exciting and fast-paced experience for players.

Game Components of Kero

  • Deck of cards: Includes 3 Claim cards, 12 Start cards, and 24 other cards.
  • Tanker truck: Used for fueling up with KERO.
  • Dice: 8 dice for determining resources and 5 white dice for the First Player.
  • Jerrycans: For fueling up at the Refinery.
  • Tuarek tiles: Provide special abilities and support.
  • Permanent Ability tiles: Offer additional abilities.
  • Game board: Features the Refinery, Shack, and New Territories.
  • Explorer tokens: Used to claim New Territories.

    How To Setup Kero

To set up the game, divide the deck of cards into specific piles: 3 Claim cards, 12 Start cards, and the remaining 24 cards. Divide the 24 cards into three roughly equal piles, place a Claim card on top of each, and shuffle each pile. Stack these piles together to form the draw pile, then place the Start cards on top. Shuffle the Tuarek tiles and form a draw pile, and place the Permanent Ability tiles next to the game board. Each clan collects 2 Jerrycans and 2 Tuarek tiles, and the player who fueled up most recently collects the First Player token.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

  • Resource Management: Players manage KERO fuel to roll dice and gather resources.
  • Dice Rolling: Players roll dice to obtain needed resources, with the option to reroll until satisfied or until a die burns up.
  • Exploration: Send Explorers to claim New Territories based on resource majority.
  • Fueling Up: Spend Jerrycans at the Refinery to fuel up with KERO.
  • Game Rounds: The game is played over three rounds, each ending with a Claim card.
  • Objective: Collect as many resources as possible while using as little KERO as necessary.

    Player Experience

**Kero** offers a dynamic and tense experience as players navigate the risks of fuel shortages and competitive resource gathering. The game demands strategic thinking and quick decision-making, especially during the dice-rolling phase. The presence of Tuareks and special abilities adds a layer of unpredictability and cooperation.

    Pros

  • Engaging Mechanics: The combination of resource management and dice rolling creates a thrilling gameplay experience.
  • Strategic Depth: Players need to balance fuel consumption with resource gathering.
  • Variable Gameplay: The game includes several random elements, ensuring high replayability.
  • Easy to Learn: Despite its depth, the game is relatively simple to pick up.

    Cons

  • Limited Players: Designed for two players only, limiting group play options.
  • Luck Factor: Dice rolls introduce a significant element of luck, which may not appeal to all players.
  • Short Game Length: The game is played over just three rounds, which can feel brief for some players.

    Personal Thoughts on Kero

**Kero** is ideal for those who enjoy resource management and strategic gameplay, particularly in a competitive two-player setting. It’s a great choice for game nights where players are looking for a fast-paced, engaging experience with a unique twist. However, it may not suit players seeking longer game sessions or those who prefer games with less reliance on luck.
