K2 is a board game designed by Adam Kałuża in which players are challenged to climb the mountain of the same name. K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth and is known as the Savage Mountain, as it kills one person for every four who summit it. The game was first published in 2010 by Rebel.pl and became the first Polish game to be nominated for a Spiel des Jahres award.

Game Setup of K2

– Place the game board in the center of the table.
– Each player chooses a color and takes the 3 climbers, 4 acclimatization markers, and 3 equipment tiles of that color.
– Shuffle the movement cards and deal 3 to each player.
– Place the weather tiles face down on the board.
– Place the climbing aids and starting player marker on the board.
– The player who most recently climbed a mountain goes first.

Gameplay Mechanics of K2

Players take turns playing movement cards to move their climbers up the mountain. Each position on the board has a stated number of climbers that can stop there, meaning that it is possible to block the path upwards or downwards of opposing players. Players must also manage their climbers’ acclimatization levels and equip them with the necessary gear to survive the harsh conditions on the mountain. The game features a unique mechanic where players must decide whether to push their climbers to reach the summit or to turn back and descend the mountain to safety.
