Hallertau (2020) Board Game

Hallertau is a board game released in 2020, designed by renowned game designer Uwe Rosenberg and published by Lookout Games. The game takes place in the Hallertau region of Bavaria, Germany, known for its rich history in hop farming and brewing. Players take on the role of farmers trying to develop their own small farmsteads into thriving agricultural businesses.

Game Components of Hallertau

  • 13 game/player boards
  • 4 community center tiles
  • 20 craft tiles
  • 4 overview tiles
  • 4 jewelry tiles and tokens
  • 40 boulder tokens
  • 28 field tiles
  • 40 tool tokens
  • 1 first player token
  • 336 cards
  • 250+ wooden parts
  • 1 score pad and 1 rule book.

    How To Setup Hallertau

Setting up Hallertau involves several steps. First, prepare the Action board and place it on the table. Shuffle and place the Bonus card and Point card decks in their marked locations. Select one deck each of the Gateway cards and Farmyard cards, shuffle them, and place them in their starting positions. Each player receives Field, Stable, and Community Center boards, along with a Community Center tile, an Overview tile, ten Boulder tokens, a Jewelry token, a Jewelry Box tile, and five Craft Building tiles. Players also get six Farmyard cards for their Stable boards, initial resources (barley, flax, and rye) on their Field boards, and a starting hand of four Gateway cards and one Point card. Finally, distribute the resource bits, Tool tiles, and worker cubes to a general supply.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

  • Worker Placement:** Players use little blue cubes as workers, with the cost of taking an action increasing if another player has already chosen it.
  • Automatic Resource Growth:** Fields yield resources based on their level, and soil potency increases if left fallow.
  • Contracts:** Players use cards for short-term rewards and long-term point gains.
  • Modular Board:** Each player has a personal board representing their land.
  • End Game Bonuses:** Points come from the Community Center’s final position, leftover resources, tools, fields, sheep, and jewelry.
  • Objective:** The goal is to collect the most victory points by efficiently managing resources, fields, and cards to enhance the town center and craft workshops.

    Player Experience

Playing Hallertau involves a deep and complex puzzle hidden beneath simple rules. Players must balance the use of their workers to gather resources, sow and harvest crops, and manage their farmyards and craft buildings. The game offers a high level of variability with different decks of cards, ensuring each game is unique. Solo players can enjoy the game as well, with a mechanism that blocks cheap spaces but never completely prevents access to them.

    Pros

  • Deep Strategy:** Offers a complex efficiency puzzle with many variables.
  • High Replayability:** Different card decks and resource management ensure varied gameplay.
  • Excellent Component Quality:** High-quality components and clear iconography on cards.
  • Solo Play:** A well-designed solo mode that challenges players to beat their own scores.

    Cons

  • Complexity:** Can be overwhelming for new players due to the many mechanics and card interactions.
  • Dependency on Cards:** The game’s scoring can be too focused on completing card demands, which might lead to neglect of other opportunities.

    Personal Thoughts on Hallertau

Hallertau is ideal for fans of Uwe Rosenberg’s games and those who enjoy complex, strategic worker-placement games. It is particularly suited for players who appreciate deep puzzle-solving and resource management. However, it may not be the best fit for casual gamers or those seeking a quick, lightweight experience. The game’s thematic depth and variable card decks make it a rich and engaging addition to any serious board game collection.
