Why is Good & Bad Ghosts Popular?

“Good & Bad Ghosts” is a popular game due to its simple yet strategic gameplay, which allows players to engage in a mind game of bluffing and deduction. The game has been praised for its ability to create a tense and exciting atmosphere, as players navigate their ghosts across a gridded board to either escape through one of the exits or capture all of their opponent’s good ghosts. The game has won several awards, including the 1986 Årets spil “Best Family Game Award” and was recommended for the 1982 Spiel des Jahres.

Game Components of Good & Bad Ghosts

The game is played on a 6 by 6 gridded board, representing a haunted castle, with exits at each of the four corners. Each player is given eight ghost pieces, four of which are good and four of which are evil. The ghosts are marked with colored stickers on their backside, hidden from the other players.

Game Setup of Good & Bad Ghosts

At the start of the game, each player’s ghosts are assembled in two rows of four ghosts at their back edge of the board in any arrangement of good and evil. On their turn, each player moves one ghost one square, either horizontally or vertically. A ghost may capture an opponent’s ghost by moving to its square; only when a ghost is captured does the capturing player learn whether it is good or evil.

Gameplay Mechanics of Good & Bad Ghosts

The game is played in turns, with each player moving one ghost per turn. The goal is to either escape through one of the exits or capture all of the opponent’s good ghosts. The game is won when one player achieves their objective, or when all the ghosts are captured.
