Fantomen (1984) Board Game

Fantomen, also known as The Phantom in English, is a popular Swedish comic strip that first appeared in in 1984. Created by Lee Falk, the comic follows the adventures of the titular masked hero who fights crime in the fictional African country of Bangalla. The comic has spawned numerous adaptations, including this board game released by Alga in 1984.

    How To Setup Fantomen

    To set up the game, players start by placing the fold-out map/playing board in the middle of the playing area. Each player chooses a die-cut token (Blue, Red, Green, or Yellow) and places it at the starting point. The various card decks (Jungle Drum, Handelse Kort, Singh Pirate, Morris Town, and Scary Skadad) are shuffled and placed within reach of all players. The President Luaga card is randomly placed at one of five possible locations on the board.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

  • Game Objective: Players, all in the role of The Phantom, must free President Luaga from the Singh Pirates.
  • Phase One: Discover the secret location of President Luaga by drawing Jungle Drum cards. The first player to draw two of the same location cards determines the president’s location.
  • Phase Two: Rescue the President by moving using Hero cards (Phantom’s Horse Card) or regular movement. The first player to reach the president must fight the Singh Pirates using battle cards.
  • Phase Three: Once the President is freed, remaining players become bandits. Bandits try to reclaim the President by fighting The Phantom through dice rolls. If The Phantom is defeated, the winning bandit becomes the new Phantom and must race to the Skull Cave or Morristown to end the game.
