Cassiopeia (2019) Board Game

Cassiopeia is a space exploration board game released in 2019 by Hobby World. Designed by Nikolay Pegasov, the game incorporates economic elements along with strategic gameplay. Players take on the role of space explorers competing to control the resources of the Cassiopeia galaxy.

Game Components of Cassiopeia

  • 56 cards: 35 Planet cards, 9 Specialist cards, 6 Space Object cards, 1 Logistics card, and 5 Reference cards.
  • 98 Resource tokens: 28 Gold, 20 Bots, 20 Cells, 20 Lenses, and 10 Capsules.
  • 5 player tokens.

    How To Setup Cassiopeia

To set up Cassiopeia, each player starts with a set of seven unterraformed planet cards. The Specialist cards are randomly generated and placed on a tableau, determining the available actions for the game. The Logistics card, which has sides for Earth and Mars, is also set up to manage players’ resource bonuses. The planet cards are arranged in a specific order, with the terraforming cost of each planet indicated by the planet next to it.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

  • Action Selection: Players select a Specialist from the tableau, which determines their initiative order and actions.
  • Resource Management: Players can either take coins or use the Specialist’s action. Coins can be used to purchase resources.
  • Terraforming: Players can terraform planets by paying the required resources, with costs increasing as more planets are terraformed.
  • Logistics: The state of terraformed planets and the Supply Base card affect players’ resource bonuses.
  • Game Objective: The first player to terraform all seven of their planets wins the game.

    Player Experience

Cassiopeia offers a highly replayable experience due to the random generation of the Specialist tableau and the varying planet order. The game is easy to learn but challenging to master, with complex card interactions. However, it can suffer from analysis paralysis and downtime, especially with higher player counts. The theme, while futuristic and involving space exploration, is somewhat pasted on and does not deeply integrate into the gameplay mechanics.

    Pros

  • High Replay Value: Random Specialist and planet setups ensure unique challenges each game.
  • Strategic Depth: Double-sided cards and varying Specialist actions provide complex strategic choices.
  • Catch-Up Mechanism: The Fund system allows players behind in terraforming to catch up through Specialist powers.
  • Balanced Resource Management: Players must manage resources and logistics effectively to succeed.

    Cons

  • Fiddly Mechanics: Some mechanics can be repetitive and tedious.
  • Pasted-On Theme: The space exploration theme does not fully integrate into the gameplay.
  • Analysis Paralysis and Downtime: Especially noticeable with higher player counts.

    Personal Thoughts on Cassiopeia

Cassiopeia is a solid choice for fans of action selection and resource management games. It offers a unique blend of mechanics similar to games like Citadels but with its own twists. While it may not excel in theme integration, the game’s depth and replayability make it a great addition to any board game collection. It is particularly suited for players who enjoy strategic planning and optimization, but may not be the best fit for those seeking a light or gateway game.
