Caldera is an abstract strategy board game designed by Looney Labs and released in in 2011. The game is designed for 2-3 players and falls under the categories of Abstract Strategy and Puzzle. The gameplay revolves around set collection and navigating a square grid to outsmart your opponents.

Game Components of Caldera

  • 6 Rainbow Stashes
  • 5 x 5 grid board
  • Red, yellow, green, and blue pyramids in three sizes (Large, Medium, Small)
  • Black pieces (Caps).

    How To Setup Caldera

To set up the game, stack the red, yellow, green, and blue pyramids into single-color Nests (groups of Larges atop Mediums atop Smalls). Arrange these nests in a randomized way on the 5×5 grid, leaving an empty space in the center. Ensure no two nests of the same color are directly side-by-side. Place a small black piece (Cap) onto each of the six red nests.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

    Key Mechanics:

  • Eruptions: The primary action involves moving caps to trigger eruptions, where pieces under the cap flow out in a specific direction.
  • Capturing: Players capture pieces by causing eruptions that land on pieces of the same size.
  • Power Play: Optionally, a player can give up a previously captured piece to alter the landscape.

    Game Objective:

  • The goal is to collect three monochrome Trios, each consisting of a small, medium, and large piece of a single color.

    Player Experience

“Caldera” offers a unique blend of strategy and luck. Players must carefully plan their moves to maximize the chances of capturing the right pieces while navigating the constraints of the board. The game requires strategic thinking to position caps effectively and manage eruptions to achieve the desired outcomes.

    Pros

  • Strategic Depth: The game demands thoughtful planning and execution.
  • Interactive: Players can influence each other’s moves indirectly through their cap placements.
  • Simple yet Engaging: The rules are straightforward, but the gameplay is engaging and challenging.

    Cons

  • Luck Factor: The random setup and unpredictable eruptions introduce a significant element of luck.
  • Limited Player Count: The game is designed for only 2 or 3 players, limiting its appeal for larger groups.

    Personal Thoughts on Caldera

“Caldera” is ideal for fans of puzzle games and those who enjoy strategic planning with a touch of unpredictability. It is a great choice for players looking for a game that requires careful thinking and adaptability. However, it may not be the best fit for those seeking games with a high degree of social interaction or larger player counts.
