The board is divided into 36 episodes, each representing an event in Beowulf’s adventurous life. As the game progresses, the Beowulf figure advances along the board. Each player receives a player board, a player marker, and a bidding dial. The episode cards are shuffled and placed face down on the board, and the gold coins and cards are placed in separate piles.

Players encounter individual episodes from the story in order and have to profit (or suffer) from them by playing cards that represent Travelling, Fighting, Guile, Valor, and Friendship.
