Pathogen (2022) Board Game
Pathogen is an abstract strategy board game released in 2022 by Kolor Deep Studio. Designed by Kuan Chen and featuring artwork by Yu-Cin, HUANG, Pathogen is a game that combines elements of medical themes and territory building in a unique and engaging way. With a focus on grid movement, modular boards, and network building, Pathogen offers players a challenging and strategic gameplay experience.
## Game Components of Pathogen
– 3×3 Game boards x8
– Movement panel x1
– Character meeples x2 (Doctor and Plague)
– Follower meeples x2 (Demon and Dove)
– Influence tokens x56 (2 colors)
– Settlement markers x8 (2 colors)
– Movement marker x1
– Rulebook x1 (English, Japanese, Chinese).
## How To Setup Pathogen
To set up Pathogen, players start by arranging the modular 3×3 game boards to form the map of the world of humanity (white tiles) and the underworld (black tiles). Each player chooses their character and follower pieces (Doctor and Dove for blue, Plague and Demon for red). The red player starts with 4 tokens on the board. The movement panel is placed within reach of both players, ready for use in determining movements.
## Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective
– **Player Movement**: Players move their characters using the movement panel. The Doctor and Plague move on white squares, while the Demon and Dove move on black squares. Movement is orthogonal and determined by the movement panel.
– **Influence Tokens**: After moving, players place their influence tokens on the squares they passed through, removing any opponent’s tokens in the process. The blue player can place 5 tokens, while the red player places 4 tokens, distributing them as evenly as possible.
– **Settlements**: If a stack of influence tokens reaches 6, it is upgraded into a settlement. Settlements prevent the opponent’s piece of the matching board color from passing through or landing on that square.
– **Game Objective**: The game is won by either connecting the opposing sides of the map with influence tokens or by building four settlements in the four quadrants of the map.
## Player Experience
Pathogen offers a challenging and engaging experience, particularly appealing to fans of abstract games. The game’s asymmetrical powers and the unique movement panel system provide a deep strategic layer, requiring players to mentally picture their opponent’s options and plan accordingly. The addition of two end game goals prevents the game from reaching a stalemate, offering multiple paths to victory.
### Pros
– **Engaging Strategy**: The game requires strong spatial reasoning and strategic planning, making it appealing to experienced gamers.
– **Asymmetrical Powers**: The different abilities for the Doctor and Plague add a layer of complexity and balance to the game.
– **Modular Board**: The variable setup ensures high replayability.
– **Multiple Win Conditions**: The two end game goals provide flexibility and prevent stalemates.
### Cons
– **Steep Learning Curve**: Understanding the movement panel and the game’s mechanics can take time.
– **Abstract Theme**: The thin veneer of theme might not appeal to players seeking a stronger narrative.
– **Potential for Analysis Paralysis**: The complexity of the game can lead to extended decision-making times.
## Personal Thoughts on Pathogen
Pathogen is ideal for fans of abstract strategy games who enjoy a challenge. The game’s unique mechanics and asymmetrical powers make it a great addition to any collection focused on strategic gameplay. However, it may not be the best fit for players looking for a game with a strong thematic element or those who prefer simpler rules. With its short playing time of 15-30 minutes, it is a great option for a quick yet engaging game session.
