Numbsters (2023) Board Game

Numbsters is a solo card game designed by Luke Flowers and released in in 2023. It falls under the category of Print & Play games and is suitable for players ages 8 and above. The game involves hand management and is designed to be played by a single player.

Game Components of Numbsters

  • 18 Numbster cards numbered from 1 to 18
  • 1 Mouth card marked with the number 8
  • Rulebook

    How To Setup Numbsters

To set up Numbsters, shuffle the 17 Numbster cards and draw 6 of them. Include the Mouth card in the drawn cards to form a stack of 7 cards. The stack cannot be reordered at this stage. The remaining cards are placed face-down to form the draw deck.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

  • Draw: Draw a new card from the deck and place it on top of the stack.
  • Move: Optionally move one card to any position in the stack or swap two cards in the stack.
  • Eat: A Numbster must eat another according to the eating rules. If two sequential Numbster cards surround the Mouth card, the smaller number eats the larger one and is discarded.
  • Special Eating Rules: Each Numbster card has a special eating rule that can be used instead of the basic rule. Using a special rule moves the top card to the bottom of the stack.
  • Objective: Win by reducing the stack to only two cards: the Mouth card and one other Numbster card, with the Numbster card on top.

    Player Experience

Playing Numbsters is a delightful yet frustrating experience. The game is easy to learn but difficult to master, requiring meticulous planning and deep understanding of all 18 cards. The hand management decisions become increasingly complex, especially in the final stages of the game. Players need to balance the use of basic and special eating rules to achieve the winning condition.

    Pros

  • Satisfying Puzzle: Offers a challenging and satisfying puzzle for solo players.
  • Replay Value: Includes a checklist for winning with specific Numbsters, adding replayability.
  • Special Rules: Special eating rules provide depth and variety in gameplay.
  • Portable: The game is very portable, fitting into a wallet.

    Cons

  • Difficult to Win: Requires careful planning and can be frustratingly hard to win.
  • Balancing Issues: Some Numbster cards have weaker special eating rules, which can imbalance the game.
  • Starting Hand Dependency: The game’s outcome can depend significantly on the starting hand and the position of the Mouth card.

    Personal Thoughts on Numbsters

Numbsters is tailored for stubborn solo gamers who relish a good brain-burning challenge. It’s ideal for those who enjoy hand-management games and are willing to invest time in understanding the intricate mechanics. However, it may not be the best fit for players who tend to give up easily on puzzles or lack experience with complex solo games. If you’re looking for a compact, engaging solo experience that tests your strategic thinking, Numbsters is an excellent choice.
