Strike (2012) Board Game

Strike is a fast-paced action/dexterity game that was released in 2012 by Ravensburger. The game was designed by Dieter Nüßle and features artwork by Franz Vohwinkel. It is a game that combines elements of dice rolling, player elimination, and push your luck mechanics, making it a fun and engaging experience for players of all ages.

Game Components of Strike

  • Dice Arena: A plastic box with tiered edges, resembling a mini Roman colosseum.
  • Foam Mat: A small, rubbery oval mat (6″ long and 4.5″ wide) where the dice land.
  • Custom Dice: 31 dice, each 16mm (5/8″) in size, with black and white ink, featuring conventional pips (2-6) and a custom X face instead of the 1.

    How To Setup Strike

To set up Strike, divide the dice evenly among the players based on the number of players. Place one die into the arena to start. If the starting die lands on the X face, roll again until a numbered face is obtained.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

  • Objective: Be the last player with dice remaining.
  • Turn Structure:
    – Roll one die into the arena.
    – If the die matches any existing dice, remove all matching dice and end your turn.
    – If no match is made, choose to end your turn or roll another die.
    – If a die lands on the X face, it is removed from the game.
    – If a die bounces out of the arena, it is also removed.

  • Clean Sweep: If the arena is cleared of all dice, the next player must roll all their dice into the arena simultaneously.
  • Knocking Dice: Players can legally knock other dice in the arena to change their values.

    Player Experience

Strike is known for its fast-paced and engaging gameplay, making it accessible and enjoyable for players of all ages. The game is highly reliant on luck, which adds to its excitement and unpredictability. Players can experience wild swings in fortune, especially during the Clean Sweep, where a player must roll all their dice at once. The game’s simplicity and quick setup make it a favorite at family gatherings, conventions, and casual game nights.

    Pros

  • Fast-paced and Engaging: Games are quick and fun, often leading to multiple rounds in a single session.
  • Easy to Teach and Play: Simple rules make it accessible to non-gamers and children.
  • High Energy and Interactive: Players can get excited and involved, especially during dramatic turns.
  • Language Independent: The game can be played by anyone, regardless of language.
  • Wide Age Range: Suitable for players as young as 6 and as old as 70.

    Cons

  • Almost Purely Based on Luck: Minimal strategy involved, which may not appeal to strategic gamers.
  • High Price for Components: The $20 price tag may seem steep for what is essentially a set of dice and a plastic arena.

    Personal Thoughts on Strike

Strike is perfect for those looking for a light, fun, and social game experience. It’s ideal for family gatherings, casual game nights, and conventions where players are seeking entertainment rather than deep strategy. While it may not satisfy the strategic itch of hardcore gamers, it excels as a dexterity and press-your-luck game that keeps players engaged and cheering. If you’re willing to accept its simplicity and reliance on luck, Strike can be a wonderfully enjoyable addition to your game collection.
