The game is targeted towards children aged 5 and above, and revolves around a religious theme. Game Components of Candle Quest

  • 60 Candle cards
  • 5 player screens
  • 54 Shekel coins
  • One full color 9-page Rules booklet
  • One bright red, 9 1/4″ x 5 7/8″ Standard cardboard VPG game box
  • One beautiful box cover sleeve
  • One “Wipes-A-Lot” napkin
  • One charcoal desiccant packet.

    How To Setup Candle Quest

To set up the game, each player receives a player screen and a set amount of Shekel coins. The Candle cards are shuffled and placed face down within reach of all players. The game begins with each player taking turns drawing cards from the draw pile or interacting with cards in their personal discard pile.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

  • Mechanics:** Auction/Bidding, Set Collection
  • Objective:** In the basic game, the first player to collect all eight differently colored candles wins. In the advanced game, the player with the highest score at the end wins.
  • Gameplay:**
    – On your turn, you flip over a card from the draw pile, then buy, sell, or auction the card.
    – You can also loot a card from your personal discard pile.
    – Auctions start with you and go once around without returning to you. If you win the auction, you pay the bank; if another player wins, they pay you and take the candle.
    – The deck includes unlit candles that must be paid off but can be used to pay off other unlit candles or loot candles. Dancing candles are wild and can be used in place of any color.

    Player Experience

Candle Quest offers a engaging and family-friendly experience. The game is easy to learn, making it accessible to children as young as five, thanks to its junior variant that removes auctions and discard pile purchases. For adults and experienced gamers, the game provides a solid set-collection and auction mechanism that requires strategic thinking. The game’s theme, centered around the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, adds a unique and cultural twist without any religious content.

    Pros

  • Family-Friendly:** Suitable for ages 5 and up with a junior variant.
  • Quick Gameplay:** Games last about 30 minutes.
  • Strategic Depth:** Combines set-collection, auction, and money-management mechanics.
  • Cultural Theme:** Unique Hanukkah theme that is culturally rich but not religiously oriented.

    Cons

  • Limited Complexity:** May not appeal to gamers seeking highly complex games.
  • Repetitive:** Some players might find the gameplay repetitive after several sessions.
  • User Rating:** Despite its merits, it has a mixed user rating, indicating it may not be for everyone.

    Personal Thoughts on Candle Quest

Candle Quest is an excellent choice for families and casual gamers looking for a game that is both fun and culturally enriching. Its ease of play and short game duration make it perfect for a quick family game night or an introductory game for new players. While it may not satisfy the appetite of hardcore gamers seeking complex strategies, it fills a niche as a gateway game with crossover appeal to non-gamers and a unique theme that stands out in the market.
