Unrest (2023) Board Game

Unrest is a card game designed by Jor Ros and published by Pandasaurus Games. It was released in 2023 and is designed for 2 players, with a runtime of 10-20 minutes. The game falls under the category of card games and features a set collection mechanism.

Game Components of Unrest

  • 5 City District tiles
  • Rebellion deck with cards in four suits (numbered 2-6) and misdirection cards
  • 4 Power Tokens for the Empire (Surveil, Destroy, Reroute, Blockade)
  • Mission cards
  • Area of interest token
  • Revolution mission card

    How To Setup Unrest

To set up Unrest, place the five district tiles on the table. If playing with the Capitol variant, position the Capitol tile in the middle. The Rebellion player draws five cards from their deck, and the Empire player takes the four Power Tokens. Draw the Revolution mission card and three other random missions, placing them face up.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

  • Asymmetric Player Powers: One player plays as the Rebellion, while the other plays as the Empire, each with unique strategies and objectives.
  • Bluffing and Hand Management: The Rebellion selects two adjacent districts, plays three cards (two face down, one face up), and tries to complete Mission Objectives to liberate districts.
  • Deduction and Reaction: The Empire uses Power Tokens to counter the Rebellion’s moves by revealing, destroying, rerouting, or blocking cards.
  • Game Objective:
  • Rebellion: Liberate three City Districts by fulfilling Mission Objectives.
  • Empire: Deplete the Rebellion’s deck to establish dominance.

    Player Experience

Playing Unrest involves intense strategic thinking and quick decision-making. As the Rebellion, you must carefully select cards and districts to outmaneuver the Empire, using bluffing and misdirection to your advantage. As the Empire, you engage in a reactionary game of deduction, trying to figure out the Rebellion’s plans and counter their moves effectively.

    Pros

  • High Replayability: Diverse strategies and card combinations offer a lot of replay value.
  • Tactical Depth: Every move requires careful consideration, making the game engaging and challenging.
  • Thematic Engagement: The game’s dystopian theme and asymmetric mechanics create a compelling narrative.

    Cons

  • One-Sided Experience: The game can feel unbalanced, with the Rebellion’s turns often being more engaging and complex than the Empire’s.
  • Brief Empire Turns: Empire players may feel their turns are too short and lack significant impact.

    Personal Thoughts on Unrest

Unrest is ideal for those who enjoy asymmetric games and strategic bluffing. It is particularly suited for fans of dystopian themes and quick, intense gameplay. However, players seeking a more balanced experience between both roles might find the game less satisfying. Despite this, Unrest offers a unique and engaging experience, especially for those who relish the challenge of outthinking their opponent.
