Bear Down! (2019) Board Game

Bear Down! is a board game released in 2019 by AMIGO, designed by Stefan Kloß and Anna Oppolzer. The game is suitable for 2-4 players, with a playtime of around 20 minutes. It is aimed at players aged 6 and above, making it a fun and accessible game for families to enjoy together.

Game Components of Bear Down!

  • Game board
  • 5 color-coded dice
  • River tiles
  • Bare rock token
  • Big rock token
  • Salmon tokens
  • Bear tokens
  • Barriers

    How To Setup Bear Down!

To set up Bear Down!, place the game board on top of the box, ensuring the river flows down off the edge. The board is divided into bare rock, the pool, and the river, which is split into five color-coded streams. Use one more stream than the number of players; for example, in a four-player game, use all five streams but not the bottom one in a three-player game, and not the top or bottom streams in a two-player game. Remove the dice for any unused streams. Place 10 river tiles underneath the big rock token for potential later use. Distribute six river tiles in each of the used streams, some of which may be hidden under bare rock. Place one salmon token on the river tile just before the edge of the waterfall on each stream, and put the rest of the fish in the pool. Each player places their bear on bare rock and takes the corresponding bear token. The first player takes the five dice and rolls them to determine the initial river movement.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

  • Push-your-luck mechanism: Players roll dice to move the river streams.
  • Resource management: Manage the movement of river tiles and fish.
  • Objective: Collect fish by navigating your bear through the streams without losing them over the waterfall.
  • Game end condition: The game ends when the pool of fish is insufficient to resolve the dice roll or when the last regular river tile is used up.
  • Scoring: Fish banked on bare rock are worth one point each, and fish carried by bears still in the river are worth half a point.

    Player Experience

Bear Down offers a fun and streamlined experience that appeals to both children and adults. The game’s mechanics, inspired by the Spiel des Jahres winner Niagara, are simplified yet engaging. Players enjoy the challenge of navigating their bears through the river streams to catch fish while avoiding the risks of losing them over the waterfall.

    Pros

  • Family-friendly: Suitable for players aged 6 and up.
  • Engaging gameplay: Combines luck and strategy.
  • Quick playtime: Games typically do not outstay their welcome.
  • Visual appeal: The board and components are colorful and well-designed.

    Cons

  • Luck element: The game heavily relies on dice rolls, which can be unpredictable.
  • Limited depth: Simplified mechanics may not appeal to experienced gamers seeking complexity.
