How To Setup Dice & Dragons

To set up the game, each player takes one or more Role Cards depending on the player count: one player takes 3-6 Role Cards, two players take two Role Cards each, and three or more players take one Role Card each. Players start with a specified amount of gold: 4 gold for one player, 3 gold for two players, 2 gold for 3-4 players, and 1 gold for 5-6 players. The gold is split among the roles, and any role starting with 0 gold is set to Knocked Out. The remaining gold forms the Dragon’s initial hoard. The Dragon coin is placed face-up in the center, and the Dragon die is set to its one-gold face.

    Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective

  • Objective:** Players work cooperatively to drain the Dragon’s hoard, taking all its gold.
  • Rolling Dice:** Each turn, players roll all seven of their dice and resolve them based on the symbols rolled.
  • Banners:** Passed to other players to reroll.
  • Flames:** Three Flames end the turn and trigger a Dragon attack.
  • Swords:** Three or more Swords allow players to perform actions and special abilities, often attacking the Dragon.
  • Shields:** Collect Energy Tokens, with three Shields converting to one Energy Token.
  • Rerolling:** Players can reroll specific dice faces.
  • Dragon Attack:** The Dragon deals damage equal to the value on the Dragon die, which increases by one at the end of each round.

    Player Experience

In Dice & Dragons, players engage in a dynamic cooperative experience, managing their dice rolls strategically to defeat the Dragon. The game requires teamwork and quick decision-making, as players must balance their own actions with the need to manage the Dragon’s growing threat. The ability to pass Banners and use Shields to collect Energy adds a layer of strategy and cooperation.

    Pros

  • Cooperative Gameplay:** Encourages teamwork and strategy among players.
  • Dynamic Dice Rolling:** Provides a high level of randomness and excitement.
  • Adjustable Difficulty:** Players can adjust the difficulty by choosing the number of Role Cards and the aggression level of the Dragon.
  • Replayability:** Different Role Cards and random dice rolls offer varied gameplay experiences.

    Cons

  • Complexity:** Managing multiple Role Cards and abilities can be overwhelming for new players.
  • Dragon Aggression:** The increasing aggression of the Dragon can lead to a steep difficulty curve.

Personal Thoughts on Dice & Dragons

Dice & Dragons is ideal for fans of cooperative games and those who enjoy the unpredictability of dice rolling. It’s a great choice for families or groups looking for a game that promotes teamwork and strategic thinking. However, it may not be the best fit for players who prefer games with less luck involved or those who find complex rules daunting. Overall, it offers a fun and challenging experience that can be tailored to different player preferences.
