Togyzkumalak
Togyzkumalak has been played for centuries in the Kazakh steppes, and its rules were first described in literature by Kazakh scientist and linguist Sarsen Amanzholov in 1936. The championship is conducted every two years and celebrates the common history and cultural heritage of the Turkic world.

How To Setup Togyzkumalak
To set up the game, each player has 9 otau holes with 9 kumalaks in each, totaling 81 kumalaks per player. The two kazan holes are empty at the start. The players sit opposite each other, with their otau holes facing them and the kazan holes closer to their opponent’s side.
Gameplay Mechanics and Game Objective
– Players move alternately, taking all stones from one of their otau holes and distributing them anticlockwise.
– The last stone must be dropped into the next hole, unless there was only one stone, in which case it goes directly into the next hole.
– If the last stone falls into an opponent’s hole with an even number of stones, those stones are captured and added to the player’s kazan.
– A tuzdik can be created if the last stone falls into an opponent’s hole with three stones, capturing those stones.
– The game ends when one player captures more than 81 stones or when no more moves are possible, with the remaining stones on the board being captured by the player on whose side they are.
Player Experience
Togyzkumalak is a game that fosters strategic thinking, math skills, and patience. Players must carefully plan their moves to maximize their stone capture. The game is transmitted both informally and through formal education, and its popularity extends beyond traditional playing communities, with mobile applications and international tournaments.
